Student answer (Band 6.0)

LIVING IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY WHERE WE HAVE TO SPEAK A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE CAN CAUSE SOME TROUBLES IN WORK LIFEOR IN THEIR PERSONAL LIFE AS WELL. THIS ESSAY WILL DISCUSS POSSIBLE REASONS AND A RELEVANT EXAMPLES FOR MY PARTIAL AGREEMENT ON THIS STATEMENT.

ON THE ONE HAND, PEOPLE CAN FACE MANY DIFFICULTY WHILE COMMUNATING WITH LOCAL PERSON IN THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE, SUCH AS MISUNDERSTANDING, READING WRONG INFORMATION WHILE TRAVELING. FOR INSTANCE, MANY PEOPLE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE LOCAL SLANGS, GESTURES OR PHRASES WHICH CAN BE DIFFICULT TO KNOW AT THE TIME OF EMERGENCY, IF NOT CORRECTED AT THE RIGHT TIME THE MISUNDERSTANDING CAN LEAD TO A HEATED ARGUMENT AND MIGHT HAVE TO TAKE HELP FROM EITHER TRANSLATION APP OR A PROFESSIONAL BILINGUAL. THIS CAN AFFECT IN THEIR RELATIONSHIPS AND EVEN IN THEIR WORK LIFE AS WELL.

ON THE OTHER HAND, KNOWING FOREIGN LANGUAGE IS ALSO BENEFICIAL SOMETIMES, SUCH AS IN ACADEMICS AND IN CORPORATE LIFE AS WELL. PEOPLE DEVELOPE BETTER CONNECTIONS AND CAN GAIN VALUABLE INFORMATION IF BOTH OF THEM ARE SPEAING IN THE SAME LANGUAGE. ALSO LEARNING DIFFRENT LANGUAGE CAN PROVIDE MORE CONFIDENCE AND MORE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AS MANY COMPANIES TEND TO SELECT THOES WHO ARE BILINGUAL AND HAVE A BETTER CHANCE TO GET PROMOTION OR HIGH-PAYING JOB.

IN CONCLUSION, ALTHOUGH LANGUAGE BARRIER CAN CAUSE SERIOUS PROBLEMS AND PRACTICAL ISSUES, LEARNING LOCAL LANGUAGE CAN PROVIDE SEVERAL IMPORTANT BENIFITES. THEREFORE, I PARTLY AGREE THAT SPEAKING A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE CAN CAUSE SERIOUS PROBLEMS, AS THESE DIFFICULTIES CAN BE REDUCED THROUGH REGULAR PRACTICE AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the problems and benefits of living in a foreign-language environment. However, the development is somewhat superficial. While you mention social and practical issues like misunderstandings and travel difficulties, these points are not fully extended with concrete, specific examples. The 'on the other hand' paragraph shifts focus to the benefits of learning a language, which is relevant, but the essay lacks a deep exploration of the 'serious social problems' mentioned in the prompt. To improve, ensure that your arguments are supported by more detailed explanations or specific real-world scenarios rather than general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs with a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in your argument. However, the flow between sentences within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the discussion of language barriers and the reliance on translation apps could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun 'them' in the second body paragraph, which lacks a clear antecedent.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'bilingual,' 'corporate life,' and 'language barrier.' However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'COMMUNATING,' 'DEVELOPE,' 'DIFFRENT,' 'BENIFITES') and some awkward word choices, such as 'local persons' instead of 'locals' or 'native speakers.' To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of less common lexical items and ensure greater accuracy in spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('many people does not understand,' 'companies tend to select thoes') and incorrect article usage or pluralization ('many difficulty,' 'a relevant examples'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for basic grammatical slips will significantly improve your accuracy.
