Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, more and more people are dreaming to study and work abroad. For that, people learn new languages, skills and explore new cultures. Initialy, it is not easy to settle in a new country and to speak a foreign language. Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. I completely agree with this statement, because mastering a new language is very difficult. You have to learn grammar, you have to speak like a native speaker, which is very time consuming process.

Whenever people travel or try to settle in a foreign country, they face several challenges, such as conveying the messages, making new friends, and people find it very difficult to do daily tasks seamlessly. Language barrier can create numerous social problems, such as people often feel being ignored, and they feel like an outsider. It is hard to integret in the society, because local people often give more importance to their native language. In Germany and other European countries, people often struggle with loneliness and depression, because they have less social life. They feel isolated and cannot express their feelings or emotions.

People experience various practical problems. For example, they cannot read public sign-boards, they cannot read rental aggrements. Furthermore, it is hard to get a job, especially, in the tourism and hospitality industry and in the government jobs. Additionally, employees who cannot fluently speak a foreign language might struggle with their proffesional lives, such as difficulties in giving the presentation and corporate negotiations.

To conclude, it is very much important to learn new languages. It has many benefits. Using a translating application might help you with some situations, but the long-term answer is to learn and speak a foreign language to connect with the local people and to unlock new opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position of agreement. The ideas regarding social isolation and practical difficulties are relevant and supported with examples, such as the inability to read rental agreements or signboards. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'mastering a new language' is a bit repetitive and could have been expanded to better explain the link between language proficiency and social integration. Overall, the response is well-focused and maintains a consistent position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as social problems in the second paragraph and practical issues in the third. Cohesive devices like 'Whenever', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between the introduction and the body could be smoother to enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'seamlessly', 'isolated', and 'corporate negotiations'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'Initialy', 'integret', 'aggrements', and 'proffesional', which slightly detract from the quality of the writing. While the range is sufficient to discuss the topic, more precise word choices and better control over spelling would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical slips, such as 'people often feel being ignored' (should be 'feel ignored' or 'feel like they are being ignored') and 'it is very much important' (should be 'it is very important'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in comma usage. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher band score.
