Student answer (Band 6.0)

Man, through ages, has undergone many changes from the time when he lived in caves to nowadays, when he lives in different countries. There is no doubt, that living in a foreign country creates many social in addition with practical problems.

Nowadays, people are living in foreign countries meanwhile, they need to speak in different languages to fill different type of forms, in daily conversation with locals and to communicate with others while purchasing and selling of different type of goods ,in addition, at the time of any type of emergency conversation with doctors or staff. Many students find it difficult to relate with other local students, they also find many problems whilst making local friend and the only reason is they find difficulties in socialising in natives.

It also causes many problems in practical life. For instance, using public services, understanding instructions, fill out official forms or to communicate with teachers.

Living in foreign countries may cause many social problems, especially for international students they cannot their ideas clearly. It can make them feel lonely and excluded from the local community, moreover, these students may spent less time with the native students because they have lack of confidence in speaking the local language.

However, the problem is not necessarily permanent. People can improve their language barrier by taking admissions in the language classes as well as by practising more and more until people learn to speak the native language fluently. It can help people to be more socialise in the society.

In conclusions, i strongly agree that living in a country where a foreign language is required can cause serious social and practical problems. However, these difficulties can reduced with time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems associated with living in a foreign-language environment. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the points regarding 'purchasing and selling' or 'emergency conversations' are listed rather than fully explored with depth. While the essay covers all parts of the task, the arguments remain at a somewhat general level, lacking specific, well-developed examples that would elevate the response to a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the stance, but the overall development is consistent with a Band 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance,' 'moreover,' and 'however,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'in addition with' or 'meanwhile, they need to.' The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences occasionally feels disjointed due to repetitive sentence structures. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the progression of ideas could be smoother to achieve a higher score. The overall arrangement is coherent, but the use of cohesive devices is not always flexible or natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'socialising,' 'native,' and 'excluded.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'taking admissions in the language classes' (should be 'enrolling in') and 'find difficulties in socialising in natives' (should be 'socialising with natives'). The range is sufficient to communicate, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise lexical items limits the score. The errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there is an attempt at complexity, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'they cannot their ideas clearly' (missing verb), 'these students may spent' (incorrect tense), and 'these difficulties can reduced' (missing auxiliary verb). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with comma usage and run-on sentences. The errors are frequent enough to be noticeable, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct formation of passive voice structures.
