Student answer (Band 7.5)
Living in a country where one must communicate in a foreign language often presents significant hurdles. I completely agree that relying on an unfamiliar language creates serious social isolation as well as practical, everyday difficulties for immigrants.
First, language barriers directly cause major social problems, primarily related to social integration and mental well-being. When individuals cannot express themselves fluently, forming meaningful relationships with locals becomes extremely difficult. This lack of communication can lead to feelings of alienation, loneliness, and frustration. For instance, many international students and overseas workers struggle to make local friends or join community activities due to fear of making grammatical errors. Over time, this often forces immigrants to retreat into isolated communities of their own nationality, preventing them from fully integrating into the host country's culture.
Second, practical problems are unavoidable when everyday life requires a foreign language. Navigating essential public services—such as setting up a bank account, renting accommodation, visiting a doctor, or understanding legal contracts—requires clear comprehension. A misunderstanding in these situations can lead to severe financial or medical consequences. For example, an immigrant who cannot accurately explain their medical symptoms to a healthcare provider risks receiving an incorrect diagnosis. Similarly, finding suitable employment becomes a major challenge, as most high-paying job opportunities require advanced language capabilities.
In conclusion, living in an environment where a foreign language is spoken undoubtedly brings severe social and practical obstacles. Difficulty in forming social connections leads to isolation, while everyday administrative tasks become complex challenges.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems associated with living in a foreign-language environment. The position is clear from the introduction and is maintained throughout. Ideas are well-developed, with specific examples provided for both social isolation (e.g., fear of making grammatical errors) and practical challenges (e.g., medical diagnosis and banking). The argument is logical and directly answers the 'to what extent' question by agreeing with the premise. The response is well-structured, and all parts of the task are covered thoroughly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, starting with social issues and moving to practical ones. Cohesive devices such as 'First,' 'Second,' 'For instance,' and 'Similarly' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, making the reading experience seamless.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is precise and appropriate for an academic context. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'social integration,' 'alienation,' 'healthcare provider,' and 'administrative tasks.' The control of collocation is strong, and the language used is natural. While the vocabulary is not overly sophisticated, it is highly effective and accurate. There are no spelling errors, and the word choices consistently convey the intended meaning without ambiguity. The range is sufficient to discuss the topic with clarity and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a good command of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and participial phrases (e.g., 'When individuals cannot express themselves fluently...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the grammar is consistently accurate. Punctuation is used correctly to manage complex ideas. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. The variety of structures—ranging from simple to complex—is well-balanced, showing a high level of control over English syntax.
