Student answer (Band 7.5)
Living in a country where people speak a foreign language can be difficult for many people. I agree that this situation can cause serious social and practical problems. However, I believe that these problems can be reduced if people have enough time and support to learn the local language.
The main social problem is that people may find it difficult to communicate with others. For example, immigrants who cannot speak the local language well may feel lonely because they cannot easily make friends or join social activities. They may also misunderstand jokes, traditions, or other people’s opinions. As a result, they can feel separated from the local community. This can also create misunderstandings between immigrants and local people.
There are also several practical problems. One important difficulty is dealing with everyday services. For instance, a person with poor language skills may have problems when visiting a doctor, opening a bank account, or speaking to a government officer. Finding a suitable job can also be difficult because many employers require good communication skills. In serious situations, not understanding instructions or important information could even lead to dangerous mistakes.
In conclusion, I agree that living in a foreign-language country can create both social and practical problems. Poor communication can make people feel isolated and can make simple daily tasks much harder. Nevertheless, learning the local language can greatly improve this situation. Governments, schools, and local communities should provide affordable language courses for newcomers. In my view, with enough support and regular practice, people can become more confident and successfully adapt to their new country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with distinct paragraphs for social and practical problems. For example, you provide specific instances like 'visiting a doctor' or 'opening a bank account' to support your argument regarding practical difficulties. The conclusion effectively summarizes your main points and offers a constructive suggestion for mitigating these issues. The response is balanced and directly answers the 'to what extent' question by acknowledging the severity of the problems while proposing a solution.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the social and practical problems is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'For example', 'As a result', 'One important difficulty', and 'Nevertheless'. These markers help guide the reader through your argument without being repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between sentences is consistently clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'adapt to their new country', 'misunderstand jokes', and 'everyday services' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is generally appropriate and natural, it stays within a fairly standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations. For instance, instead of 'serious situations', you might use 'critical circumstances'. However, there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and your control over the vocabulary is consistent and effective for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional structures ('if people have enough time') and relative clauses ('who cannot speak the local language') effectively. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. While the grammatical structures are generally accurate, they are somewhat predictable. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or more advanced passive constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility. Nevertheless, your current level of accuracy is high, and your writing is consistently clear and easy to follow.
