Student answer (Band 6.0)

For foreigners, it can be quite crucial for few of the individuals to speak a language in which they have no fluency either while speaking or dealing publicly. It can be sometimes quite exhausting especially when one has to practically show up every day and deal with few problems while working that can happen because of language barriers.

Living in a country where you speak a completely different language and then engaging with people from all around the globe, specifically during the work hours, sometimes make you question your reality. There are times when individuals get extremely overwhelmed both due to workload and no clear sign of instructions due to language barrier. It's not because of the unclear work instructions but somewhat due to lack of language and cultural differences.

Because of such differences, it can sometimes cause serious social as well as practical problems throughout one's daily routine. For instance, if the given instructions or labels were truly clear but because of lack in clear communication in a particular language, a misunderstanding could be created which can sometimes lead to termination at your company. Similarly, it can sometimes make the individual hesitant to speak during peer conversations or social hours, as they can get quite shy or introverted to share their opinion and holds back due to fear of being judged. Moreover, I myself relate with the given situation as I have been through it quite a few times while freelancing worldwide which caused misunderstandings and unclear instructions at times and lead to leaving many projects alone and you can't blame anyone at all for such barriers.

In conclusion, each individual should work on the particular language before moving to a new country whether for work or study purposes. One should take monthly or yearly courses on the language of the country you are moving to. Also, researching about different cultural values as well can make you aware of how important values are to the citizens of the specific country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems associated with living in a foreign-language environment. The position is clear, and the ideas are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on 'social problems' is brief and could have been expanded with more specific examples beyond just feeling 'shy'. The conclusion introduces new suggestions (taking courses) which, while helpful, are not directly requested by the prompt, which asks for an evaluation of the statement rather than solutions. Overall, the response covers the requirements but lacks the depth of analysis needed for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance', 'Similarly', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, although some sentences are a bit wordy, which occasionally obscures the flow of ideas. The progression of arguments is logical, moving from the general impact of language barriers to specific professional consequences and personal experience. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'exhausting', 'overwhelmed', and 'termination', which are used correctly. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice or awkward phrasing, such as 'deal with few problems' or 'leaving many projects alone'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands. The repetition of basic words like 'problems' and 'language' suggests a need for a wider range of synonyms to improve stylistic variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'for few of the individuals' (should be 'for some individuals'), 'lack in clear communication' (should be 'lack of'), and 'lead to leaving' (should be 'led to leaving'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward sentence constructions that affect the overall fluency. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage would be beneficial.
