Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's globalised world, many people move to foreign countries for education, employment, and a better quality of life. However, living in a country where individuals have to speak a different language can create both social and practical problems. I largely agree with this viewpoint. This essay will discuss my position with relevant examples.

One major problem is that langauge barriers can make it difficult for immigrants to build relationships with local people. To elaborate on this, when people cannot confidently communicate in the local language, they may avoid social situations, and they cannot express their emotions and feelings. As a result, immigrants may experience lonliness and may become socially isolated. For example, a foreign student who have no knowledge of the local language may find it difficult to make new friends, classments and participant in social activities.

Furthermore, not speaking in foreign language can create serious pratical issues in everyday life. To explain this, people may struggle to find employment, understanding official documents or communicate with a doctor and government authorties. For instance, an immigrant who cannot understand local language may have difficulty explaining symptoms to a doctor or understanding useful information related to medical treatments. Therefore, language barriers can affect both people's careers and ability to manage daily responsibilities.

Nevertheless, there are some benefits of living in a foreign-language environment. Immigrants can achieve fluency and confidence if they can regularly communicate with local residents. In addition, people build themselves as a native, which create better career opportunities for them.

To recapitulate, I largely agree with this view becaue language barriers can create both social an practical difficulties such as communication, lonliness and employment. However, these difficulties can be reduced by regular practice of local labguage and educational programmes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding social and practical challenges. The ideas are generally well-developed, such as the discussion on medical communication and social isolation. However, the essay could be improved by providing more nuanced examples or a deeper exploration of the 'to what extent' aspect. The conclusion briefly introduces a counter-argument about the benefits of living abroad, which is a good addition, but it feels slightly disconnected from the main body paragraphs. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and cohesive devices such as 'To elaborate on this', 'Furthermore', and 'To recapitulate' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow; for instance, the transition to the benefits of living abroad in the fourth paragraph is a bit abrupt. The use of cohesive devices is generally effective, though occasionally repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, with some attempts at less common items like 'globalised', 'socially isolated', and 'authorities'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'langauge', 'lonliness', 'classments', 'pratical', 'authorties', and 'becaue'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should focus on accuracy in spelling and aim for more precise collocations to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'a foreign student who have no knowledge' should be 'has') and article usage errors (e.g., 'not speaking in foreign language' should be 'not speaking a foreign language'). Punctuation is generally correct, but the frequency of minor grammatical slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
