IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that living in foreign country requires learning and using foreign language if not then, people may face serious consequences. Although, different countries have their own mother tongue, foreign people who reside there learning local language will be helpful for them to survive there. I completely agree with the notion that it is entirely beneficial, as it can also lead to severe negative impacts mainly on tourism sector and international students.

In the one hand, mastering the local language is a huge achievement which, eventually minimizes the risk of facing serious social and practical issues as people migrate from one country to another in order to pursue higher education, build their career, settle there and for many more reasons. It is best to have similar or be familiar with the foreign tongue for communication because it plays a crucial role in resolving conflicts and misunderstanding among individuals and share ideas, thoughts and views. For instances, a Nepali speaker who have already mastered the Japanese language and moves to Japan can read official documents, explain symptoms to a doctor, or even ask for directions. Although, it consume much longer time to learn but the outcome is fruitful.

On the other hand, not being able to communicate due to the language barrier can make people feel isolated and secluded. When an individual cannot express themselves naturally, building friendship, joining conversations, and understanding cultural humour becomes very difficult, so many newcomers feel outsiders. For instance Nepali student or worker abroad may find it hard to make local friends, because small talk and jokes that locals share do not translate easily. Over time, this can lead to loneliness. These social struggles are just as serious as practical ones, showing how deeply language affects daily life. In such situation, it is better to learn the local language before arrival.

In conclusion, I firmly agree that living in a country where a foreign language is used creates serious difficulties. Practical tasks such as visiting a doctor or reading official documents become stressful, while social isolation often leaves newcomers feeling lonely and excluded. Although mastering the local language may eventually ease these problems, the initial period abroad remains a deeply challenging experience for many people.

While the range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precise collocation required for a higher band score. The spelling is generally accurate throughout the text.
