IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely contended that people living in a foreign country, where language barrier is one of the most significant issues faced frequently. Lack of understanding a foreign language lead to several obstacles such as social and practical problems. From my perspective, i strongly agree that surviving in a non-native place leads to numerous social and practical issues, such as grocery shopping or having a conversation among colleagues at the workplace.

To begin with, human interaction and expressing emotions are crucial requirements for a human being. However, language barrier makes it difficult for an individual who is unable to speak in local tongue. One has to tackle several social problems on daily basis such as discrimination, loneliness, social isolation and culture shock. For instance, a foreign person experiences social isolation quite often at social gatherings where they are unable to speak native language, thus making them feel left-out. Many people feel homesick as they are unable to meet their family and friends, hence creating persistent emotional distress as well.

Along with social problems, there are various practical issues to deal under critical circumstances. Every individual has basic requirements for survival and their livelihood such as food, clothes, healthcare and favorable environment. Although, due to inability of understanding foreign language lead to minute inconveniences. For example, a person feels hesitated to go for grocery shopping or purchasing clothes because asking for a product is hard to explain. Moreover, getting health insurance or receiving medical treatment gets difficult in different language.

To sum up this essay, a person usually gets socially and emotionally drained in an abroad city. However, it also makes them resilient for future obstacles and learns a lot of life lessons as well. If a person needs to settle in a foreign country then they must learn the local language for better future.

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'resilient', 'discrimination', and 'persistent emotional distress'. However, there are several instances of awkward collocation and word choice, such as 'non-native place' instead of 'foreign country' or 'abroad city', and 'feels hesitated' instead of 'feels hesitant'. These errors do not impede communication but prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'language barrier is one of the most significant issues', 'lack of understanding... lead to', 'inability of understanding... lead to'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as the lowercase 'i' in the introduction. These errors occur throughout the text, though they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points.
