Student answer (Band 6.0)
Living in a country where a person is supposed to speak a foreign language that they are not familiar with, can definitely cause serious social and practical issues. I completely agree with this, especially since I have closely known people who have experienced it.
Language is quite important for any person who wants to move to a country and work or study there, especially when people in that country uses a language that may not be familiar to them. Germany, a European country with a large number of international students moving in every year for higher education and so on, still does not consider using English. In such cases it becomes important for the people living there, to learn the language and start speaking in it for every aspect of their life- housing, shopping, socializing, working, and almost everything. It becomes crucial for them to start understanding and talking the language so that they do not feel isolated in the society. Also if they don't know the language, it can even make the simplest of everyday things like grocery shopping feel like a burden.
Living in such countries can stress people out even on the smallest chores that involves interacting with people around. For example, my cousin had recently moved to Germany for her higher studies. She had to face a lot of difficulties in the paperwork and appointments, which are necessary especially for expats. She also mentioned that Germans were sometimes rude to her especially when they saw that she did not talk German. Another common practical issue that exists, is that people are usually scammed in the name of housing and contracts. People fall for such scams mostly because they don't know the language and can't read through what the contract actually mentions.
In conclusion, it is really difficult to live in a country where a person has to use a foreign language because of the social issues that follow. Not being familiar with the language spoken there, can put any person in a serious disadvantage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have clearly addressed the prompt by agreeing with the statement and providing relevant examples, such as the experience of your cousin in Germany. You cover both social and practical issues, including isolation, bureaucratic difficulties, and the risk of scams. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are more deeply explored; for instance, you could expand on the psychological impact of social isolation beyond just the feeling of being 'burdened' by chores. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the necessity of language for daily tasks or the specific challenges faced by expats. You use some cohesive devices like 'Also', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is more precise. At times, the transition between the general point about Germany and the specific anecdote about your cousin feels slightly abrupt.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'expats', 'socializing', and 'isolated' appropriately. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'talking the language' instead of 'speaking the language' or 'scammed in the name of housing'. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for a higher band score. Expanding your repertoire of academic synonyms would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'people in that country uses' (subject-verb agreement) and 'chores that involves' (should be 'involve'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as unnecessary commas after 'foreign language' in the first sentence. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with consistent accuracy.
