Student answer (Band 6.0)

humans are a creature who likes to be in his comfort zone. everyone wants to live in a country where they know the culture, the environment, and the language and where they also feel comfortable speaking the language. but if someone is living in a country whose language, culture, and traditions are unknown to him. it gets really difficult to make friends, to talk, or to even get opportunities for work. i strongly agree that living somewhere where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious problems to your social and work life.

the first reason for my stance is that when you have to speak a foreign language and you do not know it well it really can have an affect on your mental health. when you even try to speak it you get judged by the natives and that can instill a fear in you. then you are unable to make friends and you feel alienated. therefor, speaking a foreign language does cause very serious problems to your social life.

the second reason on why i agree with this is that when you are living in a foreign country you have to speak their language to get opportunities in practical life. when you do not know the language your chances of getting a good opportunity for work or for a promotion at work diminishes even if you are enough qualified for the job and the sole reason for it is that you just do not know the language. hence, living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language does affect your work life.

in conclusion, i strongly agree with the statement that living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social and practical problems. in your social life you will always have a fear that you may get judged or bullied even if you try to speak it and in practical life you will be stripped off of good opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas regarding social alienation and professional limitations are relevant and logically developed. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the points about 'fear of being judged' and 'lack of opportunities' are mentioned in both the body paragraphs and the conclusion without adding significant new depth or nuance. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more specific examples or explore the counter-arguments to demonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'the first reason', 'the second reason', and 'hence' are used to guide the reader. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied. For example, the repetition of 'when you' at the start of several sentences makes the flow feel slightly predictable. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'alienated', 'diminishes', and 'opportunities'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'humans are a creature' (should be 'humans are creatures') and 'enough qualified' (should be 'sufficiently qualified'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to avoid repetitive phrasing and to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('humans are a creature'), punctuation errors (missing commas after introductory phrases), and incorrect word forms ('have an affect' instead of 'have an effect'). Additionally, there are some minor syntax issues that slightly disrupt the flow. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate better control over complex structures and ensure that basic grammatical rules, such as article usage and verb tense consistency, are applied more accurately.
