Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a general belief that residing in a country where we have to speak foreign language would cause many logistical as well as social problems. I also believe this opinion as a relevant one because along with communicating in foreign language, adapting with the culture and habits of that region is also a difficult task.

Firstly, while living in a foreign country, people have to adapt with the accent of that language. Moreover, the culture and traditions of that country also changes along with language, with makes a foreign individual little overwhelmed coming from a different culture. One of the most common example is of Indian students residing in Japan, as along with learning Japanese, they also have to adapt with the punctual culture of Japan.

Additionally, it also becomes difficult for people to adapt with the public administration and practices of that country. Those going to a foreign nation often have to face completely different rules and regulations. One of the most common instance is of an individual going to Dubai, as drivers there may also sometimes face an imprisonment due to a silly crime like over speeding. On the contrary, people may also find it easy to adapt to a different country in some instances, if they are already familiar with their rules, regulations and culture.

To conclude, it becomes difficult for foreign individuals to settle and get comfortable in the social culture and practices of a different country due to shift in public administration and traditions. But if they stay there for a long period of time and develop enough connections, it may eventually become a smooth journey.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that agrees with the statement. The ideas are relevant, focusing on cultural adaptation and administrative challenges. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example of Indian students in Japan is a good start but lacks depth regarding the specific 'social problems' mentioned in the prompt. The argument regarding Dubai is also slightly underdeveloped, as the link between 'over speeding' and 'social problems' is not fully explored. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed explanations of how these practical issues specifically impact an individual's social life or integration.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved. For example, the shift between discussing language and cultural habits in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be more natural to achieve a higher level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'logistical', 'overwhelmed', and 'public administration'. However, there are some issues with collocation and word choice. For example, 'adapting with' is used repeatedly, whereas 'adapting to' is the correct preposition. Similarly, 'One of the most common example' should be 'examples', and 'a silly crime' is slightly informal for an academic essay. Expanding your range to include more precise academic collocations would help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Common issues include missing articles (e.g., 'speak foreign language' should be 'speak a foreign language') and incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'adapt with' instead of 'adapt to'). There are also minor errors in subject-verb agreement and phrasing, such as 'with makes a foreign individual little overwhelmed'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score.
