Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems associated with language barriers. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. While you provide examples like the Indian student and the medical scenario, the explanation of these points is often hindered by unclear phrasing, making the link between the language barrier and the resulting 'social problems' less explicit than required for a higher band. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments lack the depth and precision needed to fully explore the complexities of the topic. To improve, ensure that each point is fully explained with logical progression rather than just listing potential issues.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, 'Meanwhile' and 'In contraset' are used incorrectly to link ideas. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'The will approach you', where the subject is ambiguous. While there is an attempt to use transition signals, the flow between sentences is frequently disrupted by these errors. To improve, focus on using linking words that accurately reflect the relationship between ideas and ensure that pronouns clearly refer back to their intended nouns.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'handle to speak', 'making a random talk', and 'build relatives'. Some words are misspelled or used incorrectly, such as 'majary', 'fastival', and 'disases'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of precision and the high frequency of errors in basic and academic vocabulary prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and proofreading for spelling and word-form errors, as these significantly impact the professional tone of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there is a high frequency of grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('language always stand', 'language play'), article usage, and sentence fragments. For instance, 'Without language living in a foreign country can feel problematic for while shopping groceries' is grammatically disjointed. These errors are persistent and occasionally make it difficult for the reader to grasp the intended meaning immediately. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and articles, before attempting more complex structures.
