Student answer (Band 6.5)

In a foreign country, having to speak a language that's not someone's native language may cause significant social and practical impediments. I completely agree with this statement because of the inability to express emotions properly and lost opportunities in the international job market.

One of the major issues caused by foreign language is the communication problem with other people. Foreigners struggler to express their thoughts, opinions or simply start a conversation. As a result, for example, many cannot make new friends and gradually feel isolated in the long run. Moreover, these people have to learn a new language to reduce the social problems, which can be stressful for many.

Another significant drawback is when these foreigners do not get equal job opportunities in the international market because of the lack of language proficiency. Employers nowadays require workers who have a good proficiency in the language they speak and might need language certificates as well. Consequently, the foreigners who don't have these, fall behind and their opportunities reduce. Additionally, as they are competing against many native speakers, the chances for them to get a job become very hard. For instance, a person who speaks the local language of a country would get preference in the selection process compared to someone who cannot speak very well because companies would not invest money to teach them the basic requirement.

In conclusion, I firmly agree that residing in a country where one has to speak a new language creates social problems like communication issues and practical impediments such as less job opportunities as speaking well is one of the main requirements in job description.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas regarding social isolation and employment barriers are relevant and logically developed. However, the development is somewhat predictable and could benefit from more nuanced examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. For instance, the discussion on job opportunities is clear but relies on generalisations. The conclusion effectively summarises the main points, ensuring the response is well-focused on the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas from social issues to professional challenges is logical and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'impediments', 'proficiency', and 'selection process'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'struggler' (should be 'struggle') and 'less job opportunities' (should be 'fewer job opportunities'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are error-free, there are noticeable grammatical slips, such as 'foreign language is the communication problem' (missing article) and 'the chances for them to get a job become very hard' (slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally accurate, but the control over complex structures is not yet fully consistent. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do prevent the response from reaching the level of a wider, more flexible range of error-free complex structures.
