Student answer (Band 6.5)
In a foreign country, having to speak a language that's not someone's native language may cause significant social and practical impediments. I completely agree with this statement because of the inability to express emotions properly and lost opportunities in the international job market.
One of the major issues caused by foreign language is the communication problem with other people. Foreigners struggler to express their thoughts, opinions or simply start a conversation. As a result, for example, many cannot make new friends and gradually feel isolated in the long run. Moreover, these people have to learn a new language to reduce the social problems, which can be stressful for many.
Another significant drawback is when these foreigners do not get equal job opportunities in the international market because of the lack of language proficiency. Employers nowadays require workers who have a good proficiency in the language they speak and might need language certificates as well. Consequently, the foreigners who don't have these, fall behind and their opportunities reduce. Additionally, as they are competing against many native speakers, the chances for them to get a job become very hard. For instance, a person who speaks the local language of a country would get preference in the selection process compared to someone who cannot speak very well because companies would not invest money to teach them the basic requirement.
In conclusion, I firmly agree that residing in a country where one has to speak a new language creates social problems like communication issues and practical impediments such as less job opportunities as speaking well is one of the main requirements in job description.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The introduction identifies both social and practical problems, which are then developed in the body paragraphs. The social aspect is supported by the idea of isolation and the difficulty of forming relationships, while the practical aspect is illustrated through the lens of employment challenges. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, though the analysis could be deepened with more specific real-world examples beyond general statements. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, ensuring the response remains focused on the prompt's requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the social and practical arguments is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Consequently,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly repetitive, and the paragraphing, while functional, could benefit from more sophisticated linking phrases to improve the flow between sentences. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses terms like 'impediments,' 'proficiency,' and 'selection process' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'struggler' (a typo for 'struggle') and 'less job opportunities' (should be 'fewer'). While the range is adequate to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would elevate the score to a higher band. The language is functional and accurate enough to avoid any confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is always clear. However, there are occasional errors, such as 'foreign language is the communication problem' (missing article) and 'the chances for them to get a job become very hard' (slightly awkward phrasing). While complex structures are attempted, they are not always perfectly executed. The punctuation is generally correct, and the errors present do not impede communication, placing the response firmly in the band 6 range.
