Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowdays a number of people mirgrate to a foreign country in order to work or higher education. However, residing in another country often requires learning a new language, individuals who can not speak their mother tounge can face several challenges such making friends or communicating in work place. I strongly agree with this view as foreigner have to speak local language in order to live in their country.

Firsty, language barier is a common challenge to a foreigner to communicate with the local people. When an individual moves to a new country in order to work or get higher education degree, they have to commuincate with local residents, such as asking for directions, or ordering food at restaurants, which often create bariers who do not speak the country's language. Moreover, blending with local residents seems impossible without the language, resulting in lonliness. Additionally, many organizations explicitly require for language profiency to get a job, without the language it becomes hard to meet daily essentials. For example, people move to Germany for better living standards, but without German language people even can not find a job, leading to mental pressure.

Secondly, there are many countries who value their own culture more than others such as Japan and China. Most of the residents of these countries communicate in their mother tounge, in order to communicate with them you must talk in their language. People from developing countries often go to these countries without learning their language which significantly impedes their daily activities. Even in China, orientation class for international students is held in Chinese insted of English. Thereby, without knowing their mother tounge can cause serious social problems and practical problems.

In conclusion, although knowing the international language, English individuals can pass the airport, I firmly believe that moving to another country without learning their language people face several challenges, such as making friends and commucation in workplace which often results in lonliness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on social isolation and practical difficulties like employment. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the points about employment and social interaction are mentioned in both body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, you should aim to extend your arguments with more nuanced analysis rather than restating similar points. The conclusion is a bit brief and could have better synthesised the main arguments to provide a stronger final summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firsty' (a spelling error), 'Moreover', and 'Additionally' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel forced. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of referencing and substitution to avoid repeating words like 'language' and 'country' so frequently. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the logical links between sentences could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'language proficiency' and 'social problems'. However, there are several spelling errors ('Nowdays', 'mirgrate', 'tounge', 'barier', 'profiency', 'insted', 'commucation') and some awkward collocations, such as 'pass the airport' instead of 'navigate the airport'. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of common academic words and expanding your range of synonyms to avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, but the frequent spelling errors prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain errors, such as 'individuals who can not speak their mother tounge can face several challenges such making friends', which is missing a preposition ('such as'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, for example, 'without the language it becomes hard' and 'without German language'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not generally impede communication. To improve, focus on consistent use of articles and ensuring that your complex sentence structures are grammatically sound.
