Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, living in a country where people have to speak a foreign language can cause both social and practical problems. I agree that speaking a foreign language can create many difficulties, especially in communicating with other people and dealing with daily tasks.
One major social problem is that people may find it difficult to communicate with others if they do not understand the foreign language. This can be especially difficult for older people who may not be familiar with a new language. As a result, they may feel isolated and find it difficult to build relationships with people in their community. For example, an older person may go shopping, but if the shop owner speaks only a foreign language, they may not understand each other properly.
Another important problem is related to daily activities and important information. People may misunderstand instructions or make mistakes because they cannot understand the language clearly. Consequently, they may take longer to solve problems or complete important tasks. This can create difficulties at places such as public offices, hospitals, schools or banks. For instance, if a person does not understand instructions at a public office, they may fill in a form incorrectly and have to spend more time correcting the mistake.
In conclusion, I agree that living in a country where a foreign language is required can cause serious social and practical problems. Poor communication can make it difficult for people to maintain relationships and complete their daily responsibilities. Therefore, learning the local language can help people adjust to their new environment more easily.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the statement. The ideas are relevant, covering both social and practical problems. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you provide examples like shopping or filling out forms, these are quite generic and could be expanded with more depth or specific context to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To improve, aim to provide more nuanced arguments or explore the 'to what extent' aspect by acknowledging potential counter-arguments or the role of modern technology in mitigating these issues.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'One major social problem', 'Another important problem', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' effectively. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical and predictable. To achieve a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural and less formulaic. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'isolated', 'community', 'responsibilities', and 'environment'. However, the range is somewhat limited and lacks the 'less common' lexical items that characterize higher band scores. Many of the word choices are functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and academic vocabulary. For example, instead of 'difficulties', you could use 'impediments' or 'challenges', and instead of 'important tasks', you might use 'administrative obligations'. The spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a good control of grammar. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'if they do not understand the foreign language' and 'if a person does not understand instructions... they may fill in a form'. The sentences are generally error-free, and punctuation is used correctly. While the structures are clear, there is a lack of more advanced grammatical forms, such as passive voice or inversion, which would demonstrate greater flexibility. The current range is sufficient for the task, but increasing the variety of complex structures would help elevate the score.
