Student answer (Band 5.5)

Adapting ourselves in a new place or country where foreign language must be spoken can result into social as well as practical problems. I agree to this statement for certain extent because the problems which occur will basically depend on the how we communicate with our associates, so, this differs from one to another.

There are many problems associated with communicating in foreign language such as difference between accents of individuals, feeling insecure about our communication skills and etc. These problems can be rectified by adapting ourselves and practicing interacting with other who has better communication than you. To prevent these issues one must learn foreign language in their home town which prevents conflicts.

The languages which are slightly known for us make it easier for communicating rather than the languages which we do not completely know. For example, I have learnt the languages such as English and Hindi in my schooling period so, this makes me comfortable while interacting when I migrate to a new country, on the other hand, the languages like Chinese, Japanese or european languages makes the task even more difficult and cause lots of social and practical problems.

Therefore, for a person to survive in a foreign country one must be able to read, write, and listen and understand the required language. But nowadays most of the people are migrating to without taking any caution which later makes them suffer. So, using technology like google translator could be a better alternative for people to survive for few days but learning it mandatory.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by acknowledging both social and practical problems associated with living in a foreign-language environment. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention accents and insecurity, these points are not fully explored or supported with deep analysis. The position is clear, but the argument lacks the depth required for a higher band. For instance, the suggestion to use 'google translator' is a practical tip but does not address the core 'social problems' mentioned in the prompt. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more detailed explanation and a concrete example that directly links back to the social or practical challenges.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. Phrases like 'on the other hand' are used, but the logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally disjointed. For example, the transition from discussing accents to suggesting home-town language learning feels abrupt. Additionally, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one, creating a smoother transition of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety needed for a higher score. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'problems which occur' and 'makes the task even more difficult'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'adapting ourselves in a new place' (better: 'adapting to a new environment') and 'taking any caution' (better: 'without adequate preparation'). While the meaning is clear, the range of vocabulary is limited. Incorporating more topic-specific collocations related to migration, linguistics, and social integration would significantly enhance your lexical profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I agree to this statement for certain extent' (should be 'to a certain extent'), 'interacting with other who has' (should be 'others who have'), and 'most of the people are migrating to without taking any caution'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with prepositions and pluralisation, and aim to construct more complex sentences with greater precision.
