Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is said that communicating in a different foreign language for a person who has moved to a different country can create various miscommunications and also create a situation of social awkwardness.

To begin with, it might be challenging to a person to adapt new place other than their home country, where one has to learn the language and their culture in order to know the lifestyle of the foreign country. For an instance, a person who is born and raised in Africa has different language as well as accent which they use on daily basis, now the person decides to move to other country where the person have to learn new culture as well as their local dialect which can create difficulty in understanding at first.

Moreover, in the most cases the communication creates the social problem where the intensions are not conveyed so that it gives a negative impression or conflict in discussion. For example, the foreigner is interacting with locals and in that conversation the local people are not able to understand the accent of the person which can create chaos and difficulties in communication. Additionally, sometimes more than a language barrier there is difficult situation faced by any foreigners is racism. A article shows that there many people who move to other country face racism because of their different dialect as well as body language.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing social and practical problems related to language barriers. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the argument. The ideas, such as the mention of racism, are introduced but not fully developed or linked back to the core argument about language. Furthermore, the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly at 'in concluion,'. Because the response is unfinished and fails to meet the length requirement, it cannot fully develop a position or provide a balanced conclusion, resulting in a lower score for task completion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay uses basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with' and 'Moreover' to signal new points. However, the logical progression is hindered by the incomplete nature of the text. Paragraphing is present, but the abrupt ending prevents a cohesive conclusion. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'A article shows that there many people...', where the reference is vague and lacks proper integration into the paragraph. The overall structure is fragmented due to the missing final paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'create a situation of social awkwardness' and 'the communication creates the social problem'. Some word choices are repetitive, and there are minor errors in collocation, such as 'in the most cases' instead of 'in most cases'. The range is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility or sophisticated control expected at higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede flow. Examples include 'it might be challenging to a person to adapt new place' (missing preposition 'to'), 'a person who is born and raised in Africa has different language' (missing article 'a'), and 'there many people' (missing verb 'are'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the incomplete ending leaves the final sentence structure unresolved. The frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over complex grammatical forms.
