Student answer (Band 8.0)

Residing in a host country without fluency in the local language presents significant obstacles that affect both daily living and social integration. I fully agree with the view that linguistic barriers trigger severe practical difficulties as well as deep-seated social friction for expatriates and immigrants.

On a practical level, non-native speakers face daily operational hurdles that can disrupt essential activities. Fundamental tasks—such as opening a bank account, renting accommodation, securing employment, or navigating public healthcare—require clear communication. A lack of language fluency can lead to severe misunderstandings; for example, misinterpreting medical instructions or signing rental contracts with unfair terms due to a language barrier. Furthermore, in professional settings, highly skilled individuals often find themselves underemployed simply because they cannot articulate their technical expertise in the local language, limiting their economic independence.

Socially, the language barriers frequently foster isolation and cultural division. When individuals cannot easily converse with their neighbors or colleagues, forming meaningful relationships becomes immensely challenging. This social disconnect often leads to emotional distress, anxiety, and a persistent feeling of alienation. On a broader community level, non-native speakers may naturally cluster into isolated linguistic enclaves to feel secure. While this offers temporary comfort, it can breed mutual distrust between locals and immigrant communities, hindering long-term societal cohesion and integration.

In conclusion, language proficiency is the fundamental to functioning effectively in a foreign country. Without it, the individuals inevitably struggle with critical daily logistics and face profound social isolation, ultimately hindering their ability to integrate successfully into the wider society.
