IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that living in a country where people speak different languages is a matter of serious concern because it may causes communication barriers and make social interactions difficult. While others believe that, language is not a major issue in terms of social interaction. In my opinion, speaking a foreign language may lead to difficulty interacting with others which may pose serious hurdles in terms of social interaction and at workplace.

On the one hand, people argue that living in a country where one has to speak foreign language promotes cultural exchange. For some people, learning different people's languages and cultural is often more exciting and enjoyable. It enhances cultural exchange and increases social interaction. Moreover, there is no issue at workplace if a person is able to understand and speak foreign language.

On the other hand, people believe that living in a country where one has to speak foreign language may lead to social problems as one can find difficulty interacting with others. Additionally, one can easily misunderstand what the other person is saying leading to several communication issues. For instance, if a person speaking foreign language goes to see a doctor. If he us unable to describe his illness in their language then it might lead to miscommunication. Likewise, a language is one of the basic requirements to get a job in foreign country. Without knowing foreign language securing a suitable job would be difficult.

In my opinion, unable to speak foreign language may lead to miscommunication. This may lead to various social and practical problems however these issues can be resolved by learning that language.
