Student answer (Band 6.0)

As far as this topic is concerned, I do agree with the statement that living in a country where people speak a foreign language can cause serious social and practical problems. However, I believe that these difficulties can be reduced through proper language learning and social support.

Firstly, language differences can create social problems for people living in a foreign country. If a person cannot communicate properly, it can be difficult to make friends and develop relationships with local people. Moreover, they may feel isolated and less confident in social situations. For example, immigrants who cannot speak the local language may find it difficult to participate in community activities and communicate with their neighbours.

Secondly, language barriers can also create practical problems in daily life. People may struggle to understand important information, use public services or communicate with doctors and government officials. In addition, finding a suitable job can become difficult because many employers require good communication skills. Therefore, a lack of language ability can affect both professional and personal life.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that living in a country where a foreign language is spoken can cause serious social and practical difficulties. Nevertheless, learning the local language and receiving support from the community can help people overcome these problems and live a more comfortable life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the social and practical problems of living in a foreign country, while also introducing a balanced counter-perspective regarding language learning and support. A clear position is maintained throughout the response. However, the ideas are somewhat generalized and lack extended support with concrete personal examples. Furthermore, the response falls below the required word count, containing only 217 words against the 250-word minimum. This under-length limitation restricts the depth of task development and prevents the response from achieving a higher band score. To improve, the student should expand upon ideas with specific, detailed examples and ensure the full word length is met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response displays a clear overall progression and logical organization. The essay is divided into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs focusing separately on social and practical problems, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as "Firstly," "Moreover," and "Secondly." However, referencing is at times basic, and paragraphing, while present, could be managed with greater sophistication to ensure a seamless flow of ideas. Despite these minor limitations, the text is coherent and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully communicating ideas related to immigration and language barriers. Phrases such as "social problems," "feel isolated," "important information," and "professional and personal life" demonstrate a clear grasp of standard lexical items. There are also attempts at slightly less common vocabulary, such as "community activities" and "overcome these problems." However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a lack of sophisticated or idiomatic phrasing. Spelling and word choice are accurate, meaning communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student successfully employs conditional and transitional structures, such as "If a person cannot communicate properly, it can be difficult..." and "Nevertheless, learning the local language... can help people...". Grammar and punctuation are handled well, and the majority of sentences are grammatically accurate. While the range of complex structures is somewhat constrained, the errors are minimal and do not interfere with the reader's understanding. Control over basic and intermediate sentence patterns is solid throughout.
