Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the social and practical problems of living in a foreign language environment, and takes a partial stance, indicating the writer's position. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times confusing. For instance, the discussion on 'no well educated' and people forgetting their mother tongue lacks clarity and strong supporting examples. The counter-argument in the third paragraph is also very brief and superficial. While the prompt is addressed, the ideas are under-developed, aligning the response with the Band 5 descriptor where the task is addressed only partially and ideas remain somewhat limited.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is structured into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at a conventional essay format with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, repetitive referencing, and disjointed sentences, such as 'Moving further, there are numerous disagree points'. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically or inaccurately, and paragraphing is poorly managed as thoughts are jumbled together without clear separation of main points. This fits the profile of a Band 4 or Band 5 performance, leaning towards Band 5 due to the presence of basic paragraph structure despite the unclear overall progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently impeded by severe word choice and spelling errors. Examples include 'mothertoungh', 'oppurtunity', 'in crease', and 'practica problem' instead of practical problem. The student attempts some less common terms like 'vindication' and 'demotivated', but these are overshadowed by pervasive errors in collocation and spelling. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for conveying very basic meanings, which matches the Band 4 descriptor where errors strain the reader and vocabulary is basic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the essay, with frequent errors that regularly cause difficulty for the reader. There are major issues with sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, and missing verbs, as seen in sentences like 'In the modern, foreign language become crucial for every one' and 'there are saveral points are associated with it.' The writer relies mostly on simple and faulty complex structures, with very few error-free sentences. These constant errors and distortions of meaning place the grammatical performance firmly at Band 4.
