Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by discussing the difficulties of speaking a foreign language, specifically mentioning practical problems such as shopping and local transport, and citing examples from Pakistan. However, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, stopping at only 224 words. This under-length impacts the full development of ideas, leading to some superficial arguments and a lack of depth in exploring both social and practical problems. Furthermore, the position, while agreeable, is presented with limited elaboration and contains underdeveloped points regarding TV talk shows and presidential speeches. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, aligning the response with a Band 5 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates some basic organization, attempting to separate ideas into distinct paragraphs, particularly when introducing the first and second reasons. However, overall progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and abrupt transitions. Cohesive devices are used in a very basic and sometimes inaccurate manner, such as starting multiple sentences with 'For instance' or 'Because', which makes the cohesion mechanical and repetitive. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and paragraphing is poorly executed, with some ideas clumped together awkwardly without clear logical sequencing. These issues collectively restrict the structural flow of the essay, fitting the Band 5 profile.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently revolving around simple terms like 'language', 'country', 'speak', and 'understand'. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout the text, such as 'speacial issue additonally practical problem also', 'illlterate', 'different things' (when referring to everyday items), and 'talik'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, like 'misconception' and 'misunderstandings', but spelling and word-choice inaccuracies (e.g., 'forign', 'primairly', 'soeech') cause some difficulty for the reader and impede clear communication at times, reflecting a Band 5 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. The majority of sentences are simple or contain faulty attempts at complex structures, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('If people do not aaaaaabout english then how they can understand'). Punctuation and article usage are frequently neglected, and there are numerous grammar and spelling errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('there are many people in our country are illlterate') and tense inconsistencies. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning in several places, placing the grammatical performance firmly within the Band 4 to 5 range, leaning towards a Band 5 due to the presence of some comprehensible simple sentences.
