Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the social and practical problems of living in a country with a foreign language, maintaining a clear position that it causes serious issues which can be mitigated by learning basic skills. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, relying heavily on the concepts of survival and basic language learning across multiple paragraphs. While all parts of the task are addressed, the arguments lack depth and are not fully extended with specific, well-developed examples. The writer concludes with a clear stance, but the overall elaboration remains at a basic level, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors where ideas are limited and somewhat under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some organizational structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing different facets of the problem, and a conclusion marked by transitional phrases like 'From my prospective' and 'Inconclusion'. However, the overall progression is limited by repetitive points and abrupt topic shifts between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal cohesion and fail to build a sustained argument smoothly. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as pronoun confusion in sentences like 'i will be a serious problem', leading to a mechanical flow that typifies Band 5 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms such as 'serious problem', 'survival', 'foreign language', and 'practical life'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'conservation' instead of 'conversation', 'ordwer a food' instead of 'order food', and 'basic knowledge' instead of 'basic language skills'. These lexical limitations and errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted vocabulary range, placing the response firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many attempts at complex sentences contain structural flaws. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Every person have there own compulsion', 'there own compulsion to live away from there homeland'), spelling mistakes ('inconclusion', 'prospective'), and incorrect verb forms ('i will be a serious problem'). Punctuation and article usage are also inconsistent throughout the text. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, matching the criteria for Band 5.
