IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals who migrated in a different country are experiencing serious problems such as social and practical problems as they have to speak a foreign language. I agree with this statement as language barrier has always been an issue with migrants and the locals, not being able to speak a foreign language can lead to misunderstanding and can make an individual feel like an outcast in the community.

People who are just starting to study a foreign language are having a hard time communicating as they only have limited vocabulary and may have trouble with building basic sentences. In addition, it can also be difficult for them to communicate what they need and feel which result to them having social problems. For example, people who works at customer service have encountered migrants who does not speak english, as a result, they communicated through pointing at certain objects. However, nowadays there are apps on the phone in which translates languages so people can communicate clearly but in my own perspective it is not enough to actually build a strong relationship.

Language has always been a huge part of our daily lives as it is our key be able to communicate and have good relationship with each other. People also experience practical problems in honouring laws such as traffic signs as most of it are written in a different language.

In conclusion, it is extremely crucial to learn a specific language before migrating to avoid these serious problems as being able to communicate is important in our everyday life.

For example, the transition from mobile translation apps to traffic signs feels abrupt. Overall, the organizational structure is clear enough to earn a Band 6.0.

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating appropriate terms such as 'migrants', 'outcast', 'vocabulary', and 'relationship'. There are, however, several noticeable lexical and grammatical-collocation errors, such as 'migrated in a different country' (instead of 'to'), 'which result to' (instead of 'which result in'), and 'people who works' (subject-verb agreement). Furthermore, 'most of it are written' demonstrates a plural agreement lapse regarding 'signs'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, representing a solid Band 6.0 level.
