Student answer (Band 5.5)

In contemporary society, it is strongly believed that as a compact whole and in order to survive in the same environment, it is significantly important to communicate with each other. This essay will demonstrate this issue.

To begin with, there are several compelling reasons to support foreign languages can cause serious social,as well as practical problems.Firstly, speaking foreign language can lead to immersive and crucial problems where one has to live with each other in a community. For instance, the challenge is that others won't be able to understand our point of view regarding a specific matter,if there is a language barrier between two people. The immigrants who move from one country to another, mostly face this problem when communicating with the nationals of the country.

Another reason is when working together as a team for a particular project, it is difficult to share their notion with the other participants of the work. For example, when working on a model of mechanical arm, it is very arduous to make understanding if there are various nationalities included in the same team. However, it is also possible to demonstrate your idea by drawing it on a page or showing that on a screen.

In my conclusion, I strongly condemn the fact that people should enhance their learning skills and they should be ought to discover numerous languages, if not many ,then they should learn the native language of the country so that it would be convenient to interact with others as well as perform the basic duties of individuals in the most effortless way.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems associated with speaking a foreign language. The student adopts a clear, albeit somewhat idiosyncratic, position in the conclusion by stating they strongly condemn the fact that people should enhance their learning skills, which appears to be a misinterpretation of the phrasing they intended. Ideas are presented, such as communication barriers for immigrants and teamwork difficulties, but they tend to be under-developed and lack extended support. For instance, the example of working on a mechanical arm is briefly stated without fully exploring how the language barrier creates a serious social or practical issue, before pivoting to a counter-argument about drawing on a screen. The task is addressed, but the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and superficial, placing it securely at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is arranged with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing some basic organization. However, the overall progression is occasionally hampered by awkward linking and abrupt transitions, such as 'This essay will demonstrate this issue.' Cohesive devices are sometimes used inaccurately or mechanically, as seen in the phrase 'To begin with, there are several compelling reasons to support foreign languages can cause...' where the prepositional omission and structural awkwardness weaken cohesion. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs lacks seamless progression. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly regarding pronoun usage and vague noun phrases. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 5.5 due to these recurring mechanical flaws and lapses in clear logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task. There are attempts to use less common items, such as 'contemporary society', 'immersive', 'arduous', and 'nationals', but these are frequently misused or produce unnatural collocations, such as 'immersive and crucial problems' or 'make understanding'. Word choice errors and awkward phrasing are noticeable throughout the text, including 'condemn the fact that people should enhance' in the conclusion. Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical control is weak, and the imprecise language use occasionally causes difficulty for the reader. This performance aligns with the Band 5.0 descriptors, where vocabulary is sufficient for basic communication but hampered by frequent inaccuracies and awkward collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses. However, complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'support foreign languages can cause' (missing infinitive/subordinating conjunction), 'if there is a language barrier between two people. The immigrants...' (punctuation and fragment issues), and 'they should be ought to discover' (modal verb error). Punctuation and spacing errors, such as missing spaces after commas in 'social,as well as' and 'social, well as practical', further detract from control. While communication is not entirely obscured, the high frequency of grammatical inaccuracies and structural flaws keeps the performance at a Band 5.0 level.
