Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response is significantly under-length, containing only 183 words compared to the required 250-word minimum. This severely impacts Task Achievement, as the ideas cannot be fully developed. Although the writer attempts to address the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems caused by living in a foreign language environment, the arguments remain underdeveloped and incomplete. For instance, the paragraph regarding shopping contains a superficial example that trails off, and the essay ends abruptly mid-sentence (‘without prop’). Because the task is only partially completed due to length constraints and underdeveloped explanations, it aligns best with Band 4.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization, including an introduction with a clear thesis statement and distinct body paragraphs introduced by transition markers such as ‘Firstly’ and ‘secondly’. However, overall progression is disrupted by mechanical and faulty cohesion, as well as abrupt endings. The conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which disrupts the logical flow of the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak and lacks clear development. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as pronoun confusion in phrases like ‘Communicating a person with out knowing its mother tongue’. These issues place the response firmly in Band 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as ‘medium of communication’ and ‘miss understood’, but struggles with accurate collocation and word choice. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include ‘posses difficult social issues and hinder in practice also’ and ‘throwing arrows in air’ instead of standard idioms. Furthermore, there are multiple spelling and word-boundary errors, such as ‘with out’, ‘anoher’, ‘pernounciation’, and ‘unaccessible’. Because the lexical range is minimally adequate for basic communication but contains frequent strain, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting primarily of simple sentences and flawed attempts at complex structures. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (‘each citizen feel’), missing articles (‘go to a shopping mall’), incorrect prepositions, and structural fragments. For example, the sentence ‘If person know nothing about the pernounciation...’ lacks necessary articles and contains spelling errors. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, with spaces missing after periods. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect the descriptors for Band 4.0 in grammatical range and accuracy.
