IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There is an arguement that living in a country where speaking a foreign language can cause sevre social issues, as well as practical problems. I agree that it can cause practical problems but it can be helpful foe society.

To commance with, one of the most significant reasons is that less people can understand that specific language, which can cause many practical problems for both the speaker and the listener. The reason is that, this is not the native language of both the people. For instance, if person want to buy something from the shopkeeper by asking in a foreign language it can cause a problem. As the shopkeeper cannot understand what he/she actually wants. Due to these type of reasons, this can cause pratical problems.

Even though, it can cause the practical problems, but i can be helpful for society. As it can help the locals to learn new language. It can also help to them to know about a different culture. For example, if a person is speaking german language in a country where the native languague is urdu. So when he ask something in german and translate it into urdu, it can build a interest in that person to learn german laguage and know about their culture. Hence, it can be helpful for the society.

In conclusion, either speaking a foreign language in country can cause practical problems. But i believe that, it canm be helpful for people of that particular country to learn about new culture and learn a new language.
