IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Moving to a new country can lead to serious social issues and practical problems if you need to speak foreign language. I strongly agree with the statement because inability to speak foreign language can affect a person's daily life resulting in struggles and depression.

Habiting in a country where you can't speak your native language can affect your practical life. Not being able to communicate with the local citizens regarding day-to-day rasks such as buying groceries or getting an advice can lead to confusion and missunderstanding. When an immigrant visits a doctor about their health condition, not knowing the foreign language can impact how the immigrant takes the suggestion from the doctor. Hence, the person could buy the wrong medicine, worsening their health. Morever, when a person goes to the local grocery, they can face trouble buying the right items due to the language written on the sign. For example, a section of 3 different types of banana can lead into confusion on buying the right one due to the language barrier.

Furthermore, not knowing how to communicate foreign language can affect your social life resulting in depression and loneliness. An international student can face trouble making friends in universities. Native students can distance international students because of their inability to communicate. Therefore, this affects the student's mental health and will struggle to focus on their academics.

In conclusion, incability to speak foreign language can impact the person's life in the country leading to mental health problems and confusion. Although, this problem can be resolved if the person starts learning the foreign language before they move to the country and also taking language tutoring along with academics.
