IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Residing in a foreign nation where you are obliged to use a foreign language in communication can be a major cause to serious social and practical problems. Although it can be advantageous living in foreign land as one can learn new cultures, I strongly agree that one can find difficulty in communication and also spend significant amount of finances in learning new lanuage.This essay will discuss reasons why I totally agree with this notion.

Firstly, language barrier can hinder effective communication between immigrants and the locals abroad because they will not be able to pass information between one another since they do not understand each other. For instance, when English speakers visit a French speaking Nation, they will not be able to talk freely and exchange ideas. Thus, there will be minimal communication which may affect the foreigners and may miss vital information wich would be beneficial to them.

Secondly, learning a new language is costly because one has to hire a professional native speaker. Not only does one use alot of money, but also spends much time in mastering the new language. Consequently, it becomes expensive to students who may have limited financial ability.

Admittedly, living in a foreign land gives individuals a chance to learn new cultures. However, I firmly believe that there are several drawbacks including lack of proper communication as one is not able to discuss issues with foreigners due to language barrier. Also, aquisition of a new language may cost a fortune because one should look for a qualified teacher to provide assistance in learning a new language.
