IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Residing in a nation where you speaking in a foreign language can cause several serious social problems as well as various practical problems. I partially agree with the given statement as, misunderstanding and miscommunication can cause problems, but at the same time, people have the freedom and the right to speak.

Problems either socially or practically can be either caused by the misunderstanding and miscommunication. Initially, misunderstanding, speaking a foreign language at a country where not much people are aware about, can cause problems like, local people will not understand what that person is trying to express. For instance- living in a foreign environment is a difficult task itself, and speaking in the foreign language at a place where people does not understand that, can create misunderstandings which can lead to serious issues.

Nowadays, people have rights to speak, so they have a free will to speak in whatever language they want to and at anyplace. So individuals mostly uses the language which they find easy to use, whether the other person understands or not. Some people uses the foreing language because they have freedom, but speaking in a different language can prevent building a good connection to others. For instance, 2 friends from different nations speaks their native language but they both understand each other's language, despite, the usage of different language dost not help in building a strong connection between them.

In conclusion, there are many social problems and practical problems caused by language differentiation, such as misunderstanding and miscommunication but individuals have their personal choices for the languages and have right to speak, so no one can force someone to speak in a particular language.
