Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that living in a foreign country and speaking a foreign language can cause social and practical problems. Ideas are presented regarding communication barriers, fear of scams, and social anxiety. However, the development of these ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. For instance, the discussion on communication issues and tourist struggles tends to circle around similar points without deep extension. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the lack of fully developed supporting examples keeps the response at a Band 5.0 level. The arguments remain surface-level, and the overall progression lacks the depth required for a Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The essay displays an attempt at organization with standard paragraph breaks and transition markers such as 'To commence with' and 'Further explaining my views'. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing, run-on sentences, and abrupt shifts in ideas. Cohesive devices are often inaccurate or mechanically applied, such as 'For breifing' and 'In addition to ,social anxiety'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is weak, leading to difficulties for the reader in following the train of thought. These issues align well with the Band 4.0 descriptor, as information and ideas are not always arranged coherently.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently impeded by severe spelling errors and incorrect word choices. Examples include 'lotted' instead of 'looted', 'bt' instead of 'by', 'crowdy' instead of 'crowded', and 'conculsion' instead of 'conclusion'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'devastating social problems' and 'social anxiety', the high frequency of lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes causes strain for the reader. This falls squarely into the Band 4.0 category, where vocabulary is basic and errors frequently obscure meaning or distract significantly from the content.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are consistently faulty, such as 'In my opinion i agree with this said notion because language barriers creates lots of misunderstanding'. Subject-verb agreement errors are frequent (e.g., 'language barriers creates', 'tourist faces'). Punctuation and capitalization are also poorly controlled throughout the text. Because errors are frequent, distort meaning in places, and severely restrict the range of sentence forms, the grammar aligns with Band 4.0.
