Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of agreement regarding the social and practical problems caused by living in a foreign language environment. The main ideas are introduced, such as communication gaps, job rejections, and social anxiety. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion around job vacancies mentions that fluency is required, but it does not fully extend the argument with detailed examples. Similarly, the points regarding making friends are relevant but lack deep elaboration. Overall, the response addresses all parts of the task, earning a solid Band 5.5, as some ideas are under-developed and lack clear extension.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical or awkward cohesive devices, such as 'Based on this, i am agree', 'Further more', and 'To elaborate, living in a country where French language is preliminary'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks smooth transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'this thing create communication gape'. While there is an overall logical arrangement, the misuse and repetition of cohesive markers place this writing firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is somewhat limited and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors that occasionally impede understanding. Examples include 'communication gape' instead of gap, 'preliminary' instead of predominant or primary, and 'migrate their' instead of there. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'standard of living', 'educational eligibility', and 'social anxiety', but inaccurate word choice and collocation are noticeable throughout the text. Spelling and word-form errors, such as 'facing problems in making of friends' and 'cause to reduce individuals confidence', reflect a Band 5.0 level of lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include 'traveling to any other country was negligible', 'they were permanently moved', 'problem for express our thoughts', and 'if any person have educational eligibility... so they will face rejection'. Subject-verb agreement errors and tense inconsistencies are prevalent throughout the essay (e.g., 'people can also facing problems'). Although the meaning can usually be deciphered, the high frequency of errors across a limited range of structures restricts the score to a Band 5.0.
