IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that living in other countries where one has to conversate in their native languages can results not only in social but as well as practical problems. I largely agree with this phenomenon and the reasons for the same will be discussed in the forthcoming paragraphs.

To begin with, if a person is not able to communicate in foreign languages, he has to face a number of serious consequences. Primarily, one can have a difficulty in communicating with doctors, employees, government officials as well as with the citizens of the country. An individual may not be able to understand the instructions and official forms in a proper manner. In addition to this, some everyday tasks including shopping, travelling through public transports, buying grocery and other using other facilities can also be challenging. For instance, if a patient does not know the language, he will not be able to explain his problem to the doctor. Therefore, language barriers can cause serious practical problems in everyday life of an individual.

Moving further, along with some practical issues a person also has to face some issues socially. Firstly, they will not be able to socialize with others and make new friends. Moreover, they may also have the feeling of isolation and loneliness. Consequently, being alone can sometimes results in grave consequences such as depression. To elaborate, they may also feel less confident while participating in social activities and while interacting with local communities. To exemplify, a new person can feel lonely if they do not have the confidence to interact with their neighbors.

I firmly believe that language barrier can be an issue that results in many social and practical problems. They may have to face difficulties in adapting to a new environment and building new relationships.

To conclude, although the problem of language barrier is serious, it is not insurmountable. This issue can be overcome by learning language and cultures of different countries. They should always try to boost their confidence which will not only help them in interacting with the local population and making new friends but also in carrying out their daily activities efficiently.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'insurmountable', 'isolation', and 'barrier'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and morphology. For instance, the student writes 'conversate' instead of 'converse', uses 'results' instead of 'result' in 'can sometimes results', and refers to 'public transports' instead of 'public transport'. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is generally functional, and meaning is rarely impeded. These flaws place the lexical resource firmly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('if a person is not able to communicate...') and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text.
