IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world living in a country where people speak foreign language can create both social problems and also practical problems. I partly agree with this statement because language barrier can make communication difficult and affect people's daily life.

To begin with, living in foreign country without speaking its language can lead to social isolation. When people are unable to communicate effectively, they struggle to make friends, participate in gathering or understand local culture. This language barrier often make them feel lonely and disconnected from society. For example, many Pakistani students who move to Germany for studies initially feel excluded because they cannot speak German fluently even though they know English. As a result, they tend to stay only within their own community which limits their social growth.

Furthermore, practical difficulties in a daily life are inevitable when one cannot speak the local language. Simple tasks such as visiting a doctor, renting a house, shopping, or using public transport become extremely challenging and stressful. In many cases, people even be exploited or misunderstood due to poor communication. For instance, if a foreigner in France cannot explain its symptoms to a doctor properly, he might not receive the correct treatment. Similarly, finding a good job becomes difficult because most employers require fluency in the local language. Therefore, lack of language skills makes everyday survival complicated.

In conclusion, I completely agree that living in a foreign country where a foreign language is spoken cause both social and practical difficulties. Without language proficiency, people face isolation as well as difficulties in managing everyday tasks. Therefore, learning the local language is essential before moving abroad.
