Student answer (Band 5.0)

speaking a foreign language in a country where you are living raises seruous social and practical issues. i strongly agree with this opinion that speaking a non native language in a country of living causes problems in both sectors.

on the one hand, people find it difficult to speak a new language when shift to another country. Moreover your chances of getting a job also decreases and preference is given to those who speak native language of that country. Furthermore, if your academics are also in foreign language then you will also not perform better due to lack of communication because you dont speak that language. so these issues occur of speaking a foreign language in a new country until you master it. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems related to speaking a foreign language, and the writer clearly states a position in the introduction. However, the essay is incomplete, abruptly cutting off mid-sentence at the end of the text. Because the response contains only 208 words, it falls short of the minimum 250-word requirement. This severely impacts task completion, as the second body paragraph is entirely undeveloped and the conclusion is missing. Consequently, the development of ideas is limited, warranting a band score of 4.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay attempts a standard four-paragraph structure, using traditional cohesive markers such as 'on the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore'. However, the overall organization is compromised because the text ends prematurely. Paragraphing is initiated properly, but the second body paragraph remains incomplete and lacks an overall logical progression to a conclusion. Referencing is generally clear within the produced text, but the structural flaws and lack of completion restrict the flow. This performance aligns with the band 5 descriptors for cohesion and structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource demonstrates an adequate range for basic communication, utilizing terms such as 'social and practical issues', 'academics', and 'communicating with locals'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'master it' and 'secured a job', though with limited precision. There are notable lexical and word choice repetitions, as well as minor inaccuracies like 'shift to another country' instead of 'shifting'. Because the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the core meaning despite the unfinished state of the text, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and causal clauses like 'if your academics are also in foreign language then you will also not perform better'. However, there are frequent punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the failure to capitalize the pronoun 'i' and proper nouns like 'saudia arabia', along with missing apostrophes ('dont'). Complex structures often contain minor errors, though they rarely completely impede communication. Balancing the mix of structures against the frequency of punctuation and basic mechanical errors, a band score of 5.0 is awarded.
