IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often claimed that going to a foreign country where you have to speak their language for daily base activities can cause some terrible social social problems and can also be not helpfull in practical situations as well.

I somewhat agree with this statement but not as a whole, i.e I dont think it can cause serious social problems, however, it can be terrible if we consider practical situations. A lot of the times we are not in a situation where if we are not able to speak a foreign language it would result in any awkard situation or an unpleasent social interaction. However, If we are going to another country for work where we would be interacting with people , then we do need to speak their language inorder to have a proper conversation.

Language barrier does'nt mostly impact social situtaions. It is good to know enough to be able to greet someone or get through any small hurdle but not being able to speak a completely new language cannot lead to a serios social situation. For instance, if we are not able to communicate with new people it could be a problem for us but it cannot cause any fatal issue that might lead to a big problem. For example, people from different parts of the world travel to different countries for tourism or business needs but they don't learn a new language just to avoid causing a serios problem. Most of the times people befriend other people even though the language barrier still exists

But if someone is moving to another country to work there, then learning the language of that country becomes vital for them. For example, in practical situations, we need to iteract with our fellows or with other people like customers as well. So in these situations, being able to speak their language would be really needed

In conclusion, not being able to speak a language cannot cause be awkward in some situations but in cannot cause any serious problem. Whereas, it is needed in practical sitautions where we have to interact with people or operate on things.

These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
