Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a rudimentary position where the writer disagrees with the prompt. However, the ideas are very limited and poorly developed throughout the essay. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the minimum word count of 250 words. The arguments provided, such as mentioning that knowing a language helps talk to strangers or avoid police trouble, lack depth and are repetitive. To move to a higher level, the writer must fully develop relevant ideas with extended explanations and concrete examples, while ensuring the full completion of the word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation with attempts at paragraphing, such as introducing arguments with phrases like 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand'. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by confused transitions and repetitive structures. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and sometimes inaccurate manner, such as 'To elaborate it' or 'To explain it'. Referencing is also unclear at times, making it difficult to follow the writer's line of thought. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to structure paragraphs with a clear central topic and use a wider, more natural range of cohesive devices to connect ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling mistakes and word-choice errors, such as 'soical' instead of 'social', 'promblems', 'kewn' for 'known', 'easly', 'missunderstanding', and 'coummucated'. These noticeable errors require the reader to occasionally pause and decipher the intended meaning. To improve, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, learn correct word forms, and pay closer attention to spelling and collocations so that less common lexical items can be used with greater accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The essay displays a very limited range of structures, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense misuse, incorrect verb forms, and missing articles, such as 'if we want to go some were we should kown about the language' and 'some people has agrue that living in the foreign languges can cause'. Punctuation and agreement errors also occur regularly and cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence patterns and increase the frequency of error-free sentences.
