Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word requirement of 250 words, stopping well short at only 87 words. Because of this severe length shortfall, the content remains extremely limited and under-developed. Although the writer attempts to address the prompt by expressing general agreement regarding the social and practical problems of living in a foreign-language country, the ideas are presented in a very fragmented manner. Phrases like 'specially youngster face causes of this' touch upon the topic but lack any meaningful explanation, extension, or relevant examples. To improve, the writer must expand their ideas fully, provide detailed supporting points, and ensure the response meets the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The text demonstrates a very basic level of organization. While the writer includes a concluding transition ('In conclusion'), it is used inappropriately at the start of the final paragraph rather than summarizing a developed body of text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the overall progression of ideas is absent due to the extreme brevity of the response. Cohesive devices are minimal and mechanical, and referencing is unclear, such as in the sentence 'It can cause serious social issue,' where the pronoun lacks a clear antecedent. To achieve a higher level, the writer needs to logically sequence a series of body paragraphs with clear topic sentences and varied, appropriate cohesive ties.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, utilizing very simple words such as 'language', 'country', 'problem', and 'people'. There are noticeable word form and singular/plural errors, such as 'social issue' instead of 'social issues', and awkward phrasings like 'willing to settle a part from your native place' instead of 'apart'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'youngster' instead of 'youngsters' or 'young people', and 'known' instead of 'know'. These lexical limitations and errors place the writing firmly in the lower band range. To progress, the student must build a wider vocabulary range, use correct word forms, and learn standard collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures attempted are very limited and heavily prone to error. The text relies mostly on simple sentence forms, and attempts at complex structures fail, leading to heavy structural errors such as 'Living in another country, which language is different from your hometown. It can cause...' which is a fragmented sentence structure. There are frequent issues with prepositions and verb patterns, such as 'takes lot of time to known their accent'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are poorly managed. To reach a higher standard, the writer must practice producing a mix of error-free simple and complex sentences, mastering basic agreement, articles, and verb forms.
