Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of agreement, acknowledging both social and practical problems associated with speaking a foreign language. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed throughout the essay. While the writer touches on relevant points such as isolation, mental health issues, employment barriers, and difficulties in public services like healthcare, these ideas are presented as a list of assertions rather than being fully extended and supported with concrete examples or deeper explanation. For instance, the mention of doctors facing consequences is introduced briefly without elaboration. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to explore fewer ideas in greater depth, providing specific explanations or personal examples that substantiate the claims made about social and practical challenges.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident in the essay, with an introduction, body paragraphs discussing various problems and solutions, and a concluding remark, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The movement between ideas feels abrupt, and the relationships between sentences are not always clearly signposted. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inaccurately, such as the awkward transitional phrase 'As a result to be seen' at the beginning of the final paragraph. Additionally, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the second paragraph attempts to bundle too many disparate concepts—ranging from mental health and employment to grocery shopping and medical services—into one dense block without adequate separation. To improve, the writer should group related ideas into distinct paragraphs and employ a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices to ensure a smoother logical flow from one point to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message, featuring common terms related to daily life and language barriers. However, there is a noticeable presence of word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'pratical' instead of practical, 'Adapation' instead of adaptation, 'troubleness' instead of trouble or difficulty, and the phrase 'daily life access' which lacks clear meaning in context. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'introvert' and 'consequences', but imprecise usage restricts the precision of the ideas. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range, ensure accurate word forms and spellings, and focus on natural collocations rather than literal translations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures employed are relatively basic, relying heavily on simple sentence forms. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, these are frequently faulty and marred by structural errors. Frequent mistakes appear across various grammatical categories, including subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and missing articles or prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples of these intrusive errors include 'can not able to make', 'it cause depression nad anxiety', 'employment also becomes a one of the reason', and 'without faces any problems'. Punctuation is also erratic, with run-on sentences and comma splices disrupting readability. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence construction, reduce the frequency of core grammatical errors, and produce a higher proportion of error-free complex structures.
