Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt regarding the social and practical problems of speaking a foreign language, maintaining a clear position that difficulties certainly arise. However, the development of ideas is limited, often relying on basic assertions rather than fully elaborated examples. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 202 words, which falls short of the mandatory 250-word minimum. To achieve a higher band, the writer must extend and support their arguments much more thoroughly and ensure the full word count is reached.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation present, with an introduction, a body paragraph, and a concluding remark, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas throughout the text. Cohesive devices are minimal, inadequate, and sometimes repetitive, as seen in the abrupt transitions between sentences and ideas, such as moving from the hypothetical German scenario straight into general survival and employment issues without smooth linking phrases. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, with the main body text crammed into a single block. To progress, the writer needs to group ideas logically into separate paragraphs and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, featuring noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent spelling and word-form errors, such as 'analysizing' instead of analysing, 'foregin' instead of foreign, 'openion' instead of opinion, 'lvng' instead of living, 'intract' instead of interact, and 'socal' instead of social. Word choice is also overly informal and basic, for instance using 'know how' instead of proficiency. To reach a higher level, the student must broaden their vocabulary range, use less common lexical items accurately, and eliminate spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and direct questions. Attempts at complex or conditional structures are frequently faulty, such as in the phrasing 'how you going to communicate with germans?' and 'when you cann not speak a german language in germany.' Frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, articles, and verb forms are present throughout the text, including lowercase starting letters for sentences and missing auxiliary verbs. To improve, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with better control over grammar, punctuation, and subject-verb agreement.
