Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both practical and social problems associated with living in a foreign language country, presenting a clear position throughout. The main ideas are relevant, covering medical issues and administrative tasks in the body paragraphs, followed by social isolation and discrimination. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the second body paragraph quickly moves through several points like medical consultations and official work without providing fully extended explanations or concrete examples from personal knowledge. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to explore each main point in greater depth, ensuring that arguments are thoroughly supported with well-developed explanations rather than relying on brief statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the response is divided into logical paragraphs. The writer uses basic cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure of the essay. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. Referencing and logical progression within the body paragraphs are occasionally unclear due to abrupt transitions, such as jumping between different ideas without smooth linking phrases. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that sentences flow logically from one to the next, enhancing the overall readability of the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'cultural diversity', 'barrier', and 'discrimination'. However, there are noticeable limitations in lexical control, including frequent errors in word form, choice, and spelling. Examples of such issues include 'somepractical problem', 'comunication', 'ardous', 'regarted', 'peper', and 'seperate'. Furthermore, expressions like 'moving foregin country people' demonstrate unnatural collocations. While these lexical slips and errors do not entirely impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score. To progress, the writer must expand their control of word formation, check spelling carefully, and use more precise phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to construct varied sentence types. There are, however, frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and missing prepositions or articles. Examples include 'speak a foreign language can cause', 'foreign language difficult because everyday comunication for local language', and 'foriegin people also discrimination by other country people'. While some complex structures are attempted, many contain errors that require the reader to interpret the intended meaning. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences, improve control over basic sentence architecture, and refine the accuracy of verb tenses and auxiliary verbs.
