Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that living in a foreign-language country causes serious social and practical problems, which aligns with the requirements of the task. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on general statements rather than deep elaboration, such as the brief mention of Japan without further context. Furthermore, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement, falling short of the required two hundred and fifty words. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend their ideas more fully and ensure the minimum length threshold is satisfied with fully supported arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary conclusion, demonstrating a logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, such as social problems versus practical problems. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, seen in transitions like 'To commence' and 'In a summary', which feel slightly unnatural. Referencing and referencing words are occasionally unclear. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother links between sentences to guide the reader seamlessly through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message about language barriers. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'fundamental' and 'professional', but encounters noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation, including 'acivity', 'challanging', and 'practial'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips can occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, demonstrate greater precision in word choice, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes to ensure smooth and natural communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a limited range of sentence structures, primarily relying on simple forms alongside a few attempts at complex sentences that are often faulty, such as 'Fresh immigrants who study in diffeent language, it effect on their confidence.' There are frequent errors in grammar, including subject-verb agreement issues, missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrases, which can cause difficulty for the reader. Punctuation errors are also present. To progress to a higher level, the writer must demonstrate a better mix of error-free complex structures and improve overall grammatical accuracy across basic sentence patterns.
