Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recently due to globalization, many people have to settle in another countries for various reaseons where they have to speak different language except their native one. Some argue that it may cause important social problems. I agree with this statement due to cultural impairment and loneliness.

Culture plays a vital role in one's life. By celebrating the traditional programmes, one can find refreshment on top that it is a major source of their entertaiment too. In other countries which have their own cultures, a non-native people usually has less chance to connect with that. They also normally do not get any invitation of any social programme like as marraige ceremony or birthday party. Consequently, many psychological problems may occur such as depression, loneliness, anxiety. A recent study focusing on immigrant social stigma found that more than 50% of them were faced loneliness where nearly 30% reported of severe anxiety.

In addition to that, an immigrant has few friends where they currently live. Since a massive language barrier is a fact so they usually find it difficult to make friend or at least a person to talk.

Connecting all these, non native speakers generally face trouble to settle up in different geographical settings. A good secondary language knowledge is must to overcome from this. If one have good skill of communication and networking, it will be easy to connect and cope up with situations.

In conclusion, I think, it will be hard to survie in different cultural settings of different countries without having a good knowledge foreign languages and enough skills for networking and communication.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully exploring both the social and practical problems associated with speaking a foreign language abroad. The student takes a clear position agreeing with the statement, supported by valid ideas relating to cultural impairment, loneliness, and networking skills. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the discussion on cultural impairment is expanded with relevant points about traditional programmes and social invitations, whereas the paragraph regarding the language barrier leading to a lack of friends remains relatively brief and under-developed. To move to a higher band, the student would need to extend and support all main ideas equally with deeper explanations and more detailed examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance established in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the topic, such as cultural issues in the second paragraph and practical networking in the fourth. Nevertheless, cohesion within and between sentences is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, transitional phrases like 'Connecting all these' feel slightly unnatural, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as the pronoun use in 'where they currently live' and 'Since a massive language barrier is a fact so they usually'. Enhancing the flexibility and natural flow of cohesive devices would elevate this aspect of the writing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'globalization', 'cultural impairment', 'stigmatisation', and 'geographical settings'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, as seen in expressions like 'reaseons' instead of reasons, 'different language except their native one', 'invitation of any social programme', and 'survie'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'marraige'. While these vocabulary and spelling slips do not severely impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching a higher level, which requires greater precision and fewer stylistic errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and varied structures such as 'By celebrating the traditional programmes, one can find refreshment...' and 'If one have good skill...'. There are some errors in grammar, agreement, and prepositions throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'If one have good skill' and 'non-native people usually has', as well as prepositional and structural awkwardness in 'overcome from this' and 'a good knowledge foreign languages'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without significant difficulty.
