Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that, a country where people have to speak a foreign language would ultimately end up facing severe social, and day to day practical life issues. I agree with this narrative, that not speaking the national and local languages not just cause serious issues on societal level in the present, but also causes the lost of local languages and culture, slowly and gradually in the long run.

When the local language get replaced by a foreign language, it causes the issue of communication barrier between the individuals living in the same society. People end up getting confused especially when the foreign language start getting integrated in the official works, advertisements etc. For instance, in my own coutry Pakistan our national language is Urdu but it is almost replaced by English in most domains of our lives, from education system, to governmental notifications to corporate organizations in general, have adopted it. Meanwhile almost more than half the country cannot speak or understand it properly. Which is causing people facing difficulties in understanding official notices such as from courts or law.

With adopting a foreign language, the country end up losing their own national and local languages in the future. Wholeheartedly or under desperate circumstances locals have to adopt that new language to be able to spend their lives comfortably. Losing local languages, don't come alone, it brings the loss of literature, history and culture of the country. And hence bring forward complex societal issues amongst the generations.

Henceforth, preservation of the local and national languages is of great significance, in order to avoid the haphazard which a new foreign language brings alongside.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that relying on a foreign language creates serious problems, and you develop two relevant consequences—communication difficulties in public life and the possible loss of local languages and culture. The Pakistan example, including the use of English in education and government, gives the first point useful context. This covers the task, but the practical problems are more fully illustrated than the social consequences, which are asserted rather than demonstrated. The second body paragraph could explain more specifically how language loss affects relationships or creates divisions between generations. To strengthen the response, develop each main idea with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and a concrete example, while keeping your position consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion returns to the importance of preserving local languages. The progression from immediate communication barriers to longer-term cultural loss is logical. You also use linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Meanwhile,” and “Henceforth” to guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear, particularly “And hence bring forward complex societal issues,” where the link to the preceding point needs to be made explicit. The Pakistan example also contains several details in one long sentence, which weakens the flow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and refer back to each claim directly so that the relationships between ideas are easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “communication barrier,” “official notifications,” “preservation,” and “literature, history and culture.” These choices help convey your main points, and the reader can generally understand your argument. There are also attempts at more formal or less common expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the lost of local languages,” “spend their lives comfortably,” and “avoid the haphazard.” Spelling errors such as “coutry” and imprecise combinations such as “societal level” also reduce control. Aim for more natural collocations and accurate word forms; for example, describe the “loss of local languages,” people “living comfortably,” and the “problems” or “disruption” that language change may cause.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “When the local language get replaced…” and a longer sentence explaining the Pakistan example. This shows some range, and your main meaning is usually understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur: “the local language get replaced” should use a singular verb, while “the country end up losing” also needs agreement. The opening sentence has an unnecessary comma after “argued,” and the final body paragraph includes the fragment-like construction “And hence bring forward…”. Some long sentences combine several clauses without clear punctuation. Check subject–verb agreement and make sure each sentence has a complete, clearly punctuated main clause.
