Student answer (Band 5.5)

IT IS OFTEN ARGUED THAT LIVING IN A COUNTRY WHERE PEOPLE HAVE TO SPEAK A FOREIGN LANGUAGE CAN CREATE BOTH SOCIAL AND PRACTICAL DIFFICULTIES. IN MY OPINION, I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THIS VIEW BECAUSE LANGUAGE BARRIER CAN MAKE EVERYDAY COMMUNICATION DIFFICULT AND MAY ALSO PREVENT PEOPLE FROM BECOMMING FULLY INVOLVED IN SOCIETY.

FIRST AND FOREMOST,THERE ARE CLEAR REASONS WHY DIFFERENT LANGUAGE CAN CREATE A PROBLEM.FOR INSTANCE, PEOPLE WHO CANNOT COMUNICATE IN THAT LAGUAGE THEN HOW CAN THEY MAKE A RELETATIONSHIP WITH LOCAL PEOPLE THERE. THEY WILL FIND IT UNCOMFORTABLE AND WILL BE COMPLETELY ISOLATED BECAUSE THEY ARE UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE. ADDITIONALY, IF HE/SHE IS STUDENT, WHICH MEANS THAT THEY GOING TO FIND DIFFICULY IN STUDYING AND UNDERSTANDING UNTIL THEY LEARN TO SPEAK THAT COUNTRY LANGUAGE.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT PROBLEM IS, I BELIEVE THAT THEY WILL AVOID SOCIAL GATHERING, AND STUDENTS WILL FACE DIFFICULTY IN PARTICIPATING FOR SCHOOLS EVENTS. THE PRIMARY REASON IS THAT PEOPLE MAY STURGGLE IN VISITING DOCTORS, USING PUBLIC TRANSPORT, FINDING ACCOMODATION OR DEALING WITH GOVERNMENT OFFICIES. FOR EXAMPLE, IF SOMEONE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CLEARLY EXPLAIN WHAT THE SYMPTOMS ARE THEN HOW WILL THEY TREAT THEM. AS A RESULT, PEOPLE MAY START TAKING SUPPLYMENTS BY OWN AND THIS CAN LEADS TO SERIOUS HEALH ISSUE. SIMILARLY, MISUNDERSTANDING IMPORTANT INFORMATION CAN CREATE DIFFICULTIES AT WORK OR IN OTHER DAILY ACTIVITIES.

IN CONCLUSION, ALTHOUGH THERE ARE MINOR ARGUMRNTS AGAINST THIS, I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE MAY HAVE PUT SOME EFFORTS IN LEARNING INTERNATIONAL OR LOCAL LANGUAGE BECAUSE IN THIS WAY THEY WILL START INVOLVE WITH LOCAL PEOPLE.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that living in a country where another language is spoken can create social and practical problems. You address both areas, describing isolation and difficulty joining school or social activities, as well as problems with healthcare, transport, accommodation and work. The example about being unable to explain symptoms gives one practical point useful support. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others: the point about students’ studies is brief, and the conclusion shifts towards advising people to learn a language rather than clearly summarising why you agree. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation or specific example, and keep the conclusion focused on your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “First and foremost,” “Another important problem” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of your argument. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the first body paragraph moves from relationships to isolation and then to students’ studies without clearly connecting these points. Some linking is mechanical, and the reference in “if he/she is student, which means that they…” is unclear. Group related social examples together and practical examples together, then use clear topic sentences and pronouns to show how each example supports the main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “isolated,” “social gathering,” “public transport,” “accommodation” and “misunderstanding important information.” These choices help communicate the range of difficulties you have in mind. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause, as in “laguage,” “reletationship,” “sturrgle” and “supplyments.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “participating for schools events” and “put some efforts.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common collocations as complete phrases. A more varied and precise vocabulary would also help you explain social exclusion and practical barriers without repeating general terms such as “difficulty” and “problem.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and more complex sentences, including a conditional example about explaining symptoms and a clause beginning “because language barrier can…”. This shows an effort to express causes and consequences. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors in articles, agreement, verb forms and sentence construction can make some ideas harder to follow. For example, “they going to find” needs an auxiliary, while “this can leads” combines incompatible verb forms. The question “then how can they make…” is not integrated smoothly into the sentence. Practise building accurate cause-and-effect sentences, checking subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and using punctuation to separate complete ideas.
