Student answer (Band 6.0)

Staying in a country where we need to speak the language of that country can be a very challenging task for individuals to live and survive in that country where they face many social and practical difficulties. Although speaking a different language can cause serious problems if we are not familiar with their language because we need to learn the language in order to communicate with the natives, but i believe that by learning their language it removes that barrier and create a friendly environment.

Firstly, if we are living in a country where different language is spoken then need to get familiar with their language to communicate with the local people. This is because, if we do not know the language they speak there, we will not be able to engage with natives and we will struggle to make friends and to ask help from the local people. For instance, an international student who live in another country for getting higher education will struggle to survive in that environment if he has not learned the local language of that country. As a result, people staying in a foreign country where they do not know the language will create social and practical problems for them.

Secondly, when individuals are familiar and have learned the local language of the country where they live, this will help them to remove that language barrier and to create a friendly environment. This is because, they feel confident talking to the natives and its become very easy for them to socialize and do work there. For example, people who first learn a local language of that country and then move in that country will be confident because they know that they can survive in that environment because of being familiar with the language spoken in that country. As a result, they remove that language barrier and feel more confident communicating and working in that country.

To sum up, although speaking a different language creates challenges to survive in a foreign country but learning and getting familiar with the local language can help us to overcome these challenges and live a better and peaceful life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you acknowledge that unfamiliarity with a local language can create difficulties, while arguing that learning it helps people overcome them. The two body paragraphs address social communication and the benefits of language learning, and the examples of an international student and newcomers are relevant. However, the response focuses more on the language barrier and how to remove it than on specific practical problems, such as accessing healthcare, employment, or public services. The examples are also quite general, and the second paragraph largely repeats the idea that language knowledge builds confidence. Develop the practical side more fully and explain how particular problems affect daily life to make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two focused body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “To sum up” make the progression easy to follow, and each paragraph has a central idea. This organisation is effective, though the linking can feel mechanical: both body paragraphs repeatedly use “This is because” and “As a result,” and the second paragraph restates the same point about confidence and overcoming the language barrier. Some references, such as “that country” and “they,” are also repeated rather than varied. To strengthen cohesion, connect examples more directly to the claims and use a wider range of natural transitions and referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “language barrier,” “communicate,” “natives,” “socialize,” and “survive.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and there is some attempt to use topic-specific phrasing. However, the range is limited by frequent repetition of “country,” “language,” “local,” and “confident,” while several expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “ask help from the local people” and “create a friendly environment.” More precise collocations would make the argument sound more natural and allow you to distinguish social difficulties from practical ones. Aim to vary repeated terms and check that phrases fit their intended meaning; this would improve clarity without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using clauses with “although,” “because,” and “if” to explain causes and consequences. The overall meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain across the response. For example, “an international student who live” needs subject–verb agreement, and “its become” should be “it becomes.” The opening sentence is also difficult to control because it combines several ideas, while the first sentence of the conclusion uses “although” without completing the expected contrast structure. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction, as in “where different language is spoken.” Review agreement, article use, and how to structure contrast clauses, and aim for a greater proportion of accurate complex sentences.
