Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many believe that living in your own country while having to speak a different language than you native one, causes a lot of social and practical problems. personally i agree with this statement as this causes confusion among people with their daily life activities

Relaying on other languages is a form of cultural occupation. Furthermore, most legal or formal documents need to be translated into the foreign language. For exemple, in my country even the birth certificate needs to be in two copies one in arabic and the second one in french, all because we were colonized by the french.

This amount of trouble to go through just so you can make an ID or a university application is very frustrating and time consuming.

Even the education system is affected. Many third world countries use a second language, mostly french or english, to teach subjects in schools which causes confusion especially amongst children. In most north african countries which are mostly arabic spoken nations, schools teaches every subject in french, except the arabic subjet of course. As a result students need to work harder to learn the language, even more french itself is not an international language so after graduation to find a job they to be able to speak english and use it for work.

In conclusion, i agree that forcing citezens to speak a foreigh language in order to satisfy their needs in their own country is a form of discrimination against their history and culture, which results in severe issues in society like detachment from their roots.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you agree that having to use a foreign language can create serious difficulties. The response addresses both practical problems, such as translating official documents, and social or cultural effects, including pressure on identity and education. The birth-certificate example gives the first point useful support. However, the education paragraph focuses mainly on learning difficulties and later employment, while the social consequences are asserted more than explained. The claim that this is “a form of cultural occupation” also needs clarification and support. This meets the task well overall, with some ideas relevant and supported, but not all developed equally. To strengthen the response, explain more directly how language barriers affect everyday interactions and relationships, and extend each example with a clear consequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present practical and educational examples, and a conclusion restates your position. This gives the reader an overall logical route through the argument. Linking phrases such as “Furthermore,” “For example,” and “As a result” help connect points, although some transitions feel mechanical or do not show the relationship precisely. The first body paragraph moves from cultural occupation to document translation without fully explaining the connection, and the final sentence of the education paragraph combines several ideas about language learning and employment. Improve progression by giving each paragraph one central claim, then developing it through explanation and an example. Clearer sentence boundaries and references would also make the links between ideas easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “legal or formal documents,” “education system,” “time consuming,” and “detachment from their roots.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and there is some attempt to use less common expressions such as “cultural occupation.” However, several inaccurate or awkward choices reduce precision, including “Relaying on other languages,” “satisfy their needs,” and “a second language” where the intended meaning may be a foreign language. Spelling errors such as “exemple,” “citezens,” and “foreigh” are also noticeable. Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing collocations that express your meaning directly. For instance, explain whether you mean cultural pressure, language barriers, or administrative inconvenience rather than relying on broad or unclear phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a cause-and-effect structure in “which causes confusion especially amongst children” and a longer sentence explaining the document requirement. However, control is uneven, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “than you native one,” “schools teaches,” and “they to be able to speak English”; the last clause is missing a verb. Capitalisation and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “personally i agree” and “of course. As a result.” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and finite verb, then review agreement and punctuation. More accurate control of these patterns would make your complex ideas easier to understand.
