Student answer (Band 5.5)

yes, i totally agree with this statement that living in country where you have to speak the foreign language is really a serious problem.there are many reasons that proves this statement true. as i live in PAKISTAN and here urdu is our national language. but mostly in our offices and government institute ENGLISH is used which is a great problem. because most of the people of PAKISTAN donot know how to speak english. Pakistan is an agricultural country and most of the people are farmers so they never went to any school so they donot know how to speak english.so that if they are going to any government office , they cannot communicate there.moreover about more than half of the population of PAKISTAN live in villages and they are mostly ignorant . because government of Pakistan never pay heed to open schools in villages, so they donot know how to communicate with the government officials.if urdu were used as an official language most of the common problems were probably solved.

if i talk about any example in this regard, recently i went to NADRA office to make my ID card. i saw a man with his wife and 3 children. he was there to make the form B of his children. he was a saraiki speaking but the government official sitting in front of him was speaking ENGLISH . he cannot communicate with the government official due to other language usage in front of local people.

the major solution for this problem that we should use our native language to improve oue communication.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you strongly agree that using a foreign language can create serious difficulties, and the Pakistan context and NADRA example are relevant. The account of the man who could not communicate with the official gives the argument a concrete illustration. However, the response develops mainly one practical problem—access to government services—and does not explain social problems in much detail, despite the prompt asking about both. The claim that villagers are “mostly ignorant” is also a broad generalisation rather than a carefully supported point. To strengthen the response, explain how language barriers affect social relationships or participation in community life, and develop each reason with a clear explanation and example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable line of argument: it introduces agreement, gives background about language use in Pakistan, presents a personal example, and ends with a proposed solution. This helps the reader follow the main point. However, most of the ideas are placed in one long paragraph, so the progression between the general explanation and the example is not clearly signposted. Linking phrases such as “because,” “so,” and “moreover” are repeated or sometimes used awkwardly, and the final solution appears abruptly. Use separate paragraphs for your position and reasons, the NADRA example, and the conclusion. Clearer transitions would also show how each point supports your overall argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “national language,” “official language,” “government officials,” and “communicate,” and the NADRA example makes the meaning generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “speak English,” “government,” and “problem.” Some choices are imprecise or unsuitable for an academic essay: “ignorant” is a sweeping and potentially insulting description, while “other language usage” is unclear. Spelling and word-form errors such as “donot” and “oue” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise expressions such as “limited English proficiency” and “language barrier,” and vary your vocabulary without using overly broad labels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to connect ideas with subordinate clauses and conditional language, for example, “because most of the people…,” “if they are going to any government office,” and “if Urdu were used…”. However, sentence structures are limited, and errors occur frequently in basic grammar, sometimes making relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “there are many reasons that proves” (subject–verb agreement), “living in country” (missing article), and “he cannot communicate” after the past-tense narrative. Several sentences run together without appropriate punctuation, particularly the opening and the long explanation about villages. Practise accurate articles, agreement, and consistent tense, and divide long sentences into shorter, correctly punctuated units.
